Socio-emotional Learning and Cooperation in the Classroom

ENGLISH with B/H/S translation

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

Research has shown that Cooperative Learning (CL) can foster the socio-emotional development of students while strengthening their academic learning. One of the features of Cooperative Learning is that social processes are explicitly “addressed, accentuated and structured” (Weidner, 2008, 29). The learning and use of interpersonal skills belong to the basic elements of CL (D.W. Johnson, R.T. Johnson, & Holubec, 1994) and are among the elements that ensure equal participation and high-quality learning processes in group work (Cohen & Lotan, 2014). However, teachers are often not sure how to implement this aspect of CL and sense that they miss out on the full potential of the methodology. In the workshop, we will look at different opportunities to combine socio-emotional learning with academic learning through CL and discuss their potential for diverse classrooms. We will see and experience practical examples and talk about how we can apply the theory behind them to different contexts.

Asertiveness in Communication with Students, Parents, and Colleagues

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

The workshop provides practical guidance on nonviolent conflict resolution in potentially conflictual situations. Working in educational institutions involves assertive behavior and teaching assertiveness, which is often not adequately addressed in regular teacher training programs. Therefore, this training is highly valuable for educators as it equips them with a powerful tool for preventing problematic situations and escalating violence. After the introductory part, typical situations are practiced through role-playing exercises. Workshop participants can choose one of the offered modules or all three: assertiveness in communication with students, parents, and colleagues.

Navigating Controversial Topics in Education

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

Educators often facilitate discussions on controversial topics that elicit opposite opinions and emotions and possibly provoke and deepen conflicts. However, the theme of a professional approach to controversial issues in education settings is rarely tackled within the professional learning community of educators. This workshop explores the complexities and challenges of addressing controversial topics in educational settings. Participants will engage in practical exercises in order to identify different controversial issues their students face and how they as teachers react to that topic, as well as gain insights into navigating sensitive, controversial issues. Participants will get info about diverse available helpful materials regarding controversial topics in education.

Strategies for Building a Peaceful Educational Community

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

The essence of the workshop is the transformation of relationships and the development of sensitivity and empathy for others and those who are different, fostering a humane, inclusive, supportive, and non-violent approach. To create a peace-oriented educational community, it is necessary to raise awareness of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values among teachers that express respect and nurturing of a child's personality, identity, as well as culture and tradition. By empowering teachers with peace culture strategies, we enable them to effectively recognize, respond to, and sensitize themselves to inappropriate forms of behavior (stereotypical and prejudiced behaviors, conflicts, violent acts, etc.).

Geometry is hard

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

Geometry is an important branch of mathematics that is part of every school's mathematical curriculum. While many children find mathematics itself challenging, even more struggle with geometry. By changing the way basic geometric concepts are introduced during the first two to three years of schooling, opportunities for more successful comprehension of geometric content can be created. The lecture focuses on the fundamentals of the Van Hiele theory of teaching geometry, with a special emphasis on the initial steps in this field.

How to be oneself?

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

School is a place founded on a common set of values. Teaching values should be a priority at all levels of education. To promote the holistic development of a child's personality and decision-making based on sound moral principles, we need to become aware of and question our own values. Therefore, it is essential for teachers to be empowered with practical and high-quality resources to teach children about values and encourage them to think critically. Being consistent and creating a life in alignment with values is a real challenge. How to be true to oneself, contemplate fundamental values, reinforce their meaning, recognize them—all while using the School of Values and Values Journal materials—are just some of the questions we will address and open up many more.

Modifying the effects of status in cooperative learning groups

ENGLISH with B/H/S translation

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

Cooperative learning groups foster collaboration, teamwork and interpersonal communication skills. The extent to which students benefit from working cooperatively depends on the nature of their participation in the work of the group. The use of cooperative learning groups can encourage the activation of status differences among students and lead to reduced participation on the part of low-status students. Status in a group is often based on largely unconscious beliefs about the personal characteristics of group members such as gender, academic ability and popularity. Status differences can lead to reduced socio-emotional wellbeing for low-status students and to unequal student learning outcomes. The teacher has the greatest influence in reducing status differences in the classroom. In this workshop we will engage in activities and discussions to examine status differences and interventions that teachers can use to reduce status effects and encourage equal participation in student groups. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of status issues in cooperative learning and practical skills for mitigating them.

War Childhood in Literature Education (Matrix Questions)

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

War childhood in literature education (question matrix) through the integration of a short excerpt from "I Don't Want to Bow My Head" by Maja Plisetskaya (diary) with "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Telegrams to Angela Palmeras" - stories from wartime childhood by Jasmin Hodžić, published by the Institute for Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law at the University of Sarajevo. Creating a question matrix through activities directed and connected to the Three Tiers of Intellect, based on Costin's simplified model of Bloom's Taxonomy. These activities emphasize the true value of humanity, a person who needs to love, and a person who hates to hate. Only in this is true happiness. Love is stronger than evil, and in all countries and wars of the world, children are just children.

Promoting Young Children’s Positive Attitudes towards Diversity and Shared Life: Experiencing the Persona Dolls’ Approach

ENGLESKI sa B/H/S prevodom

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

Growing up in contexts of divided societies strengthens children’s positive bias towards their in-group and negative attitudes towards out-groups. According to the Contact Theory, positive interactions between members of different groups are essential for improving intergroup relations. The Persona Dolls' Approach (PDA) is an indirect contact approach for promoting positive intergroup attitudes, which enables authentic contact of children with child-like dolls, from different backgrounds. It is systematically, yet flexible approach, led by teachers. Also, it enables strengthening emotional and social skills, solving problems and processing events from kindergarten, family, community and society. During the workshop we will get to know the Israeli Persona Dolls, and through them, the Israeli and the local diversity, we will discuss PDA's aims and the steps of creating PDs. Finally, we will examine tools and principles that educators can implement in their kindergartens.

Peacebuilding - What is my role?

ENGLISH with B/H/S translation

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

With the aim of recognizing everyone’s own individual roles and responsibilities in peacebuilding processes, participants of this workshop will embark on a journey of recognizing different actors that take part in them as well as the obstacles that communities and individuals encounter on their path to building a sustainable peace. Peacebuilding, a complex and vital process, involves a multitude of participants. From personal introspection, interpersonal relations, to community engagement, and even efforts on a global scale, we witness the dynamic nature of this endeavor. Real-life examples illuminate the path— from individuals who heal old wounds, communities that bridge divides and build trust, diplomatic efforts, youth-led activities, non-formal education on non-violent conflict resolution and many more… Participants will engage in deep, critical thinking on what fuels peacebuilding's positive momentum, and what threatens to derail it. Identifying and discussing these factors is essential to our understanding as well as recognizing our own capacity in contributing to long-term stability, as well as to acknowledging the pivotal roles of other individuals and groups.

Learning from Conflict – Discussing Sensitive Topics using WCM Materials. Presenting Lesson Plans from Children in War International Seminar

ENGLISH with B/H/S translation

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

This workshop will primarily present the activities and lesson plans developed during the Children in War International Seminar (April-June 2023) which included implementing WCM materials and objects into activities and lesson plans. The lesson plans aim at teaching sensitive topics such as peace, conflict, war times, trauma, respect, etc. while using seemingly ordinary everyday objects (WCM objects). During the workshop two of the lesson plans will be presented. The workshop will be divided into three parts. First, I will briefly present how a classroom can present a learning context when it comes to discussing sensitive topics. After this together with the participants and attendees of the workshop, I will conduct one of the activities (Hello friend/A letter to you; material WCM diary excerpt) in order to have an actual valuable learning experience about peace and empathy and in order to produce an actual product out of the activity. Third, I will present the second activity developed (Things about me/Stvari o meni) going part by part through the activity plan. (Note: If there is enough time this activity can also be conducted together with the participants.)

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

This workshop explores the periods of history where societies, cultures, or nations experienced significant splits, conflicts, or divergences focussing on their implications in today’s world. Participants will discuss the role of intergenerational memories and their impact on unrecognised or acknowledged mindsets and bias. Through in-depth interactions with each other participants will share their knowledge and pedagogic practice of teaching divided histories. Together we will explore how divisions in history can be driven by ideological, political, religious, and cultural factors, often resulting in significant consequences for the affected societies and regions. Crisis Pedagogy - In Search of Universal Values

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

We are exploring the essence of crisis pedagogy, the challenges of teaching during crises, the factors that constitute a crisis situation, and the key elements of crisis pedagogy. We analyze the experiences of children during periods of conflict, using stories from the War Childhood Museum that highlight the role of schools and teachers in the lives of children during wartime. We connect these elements with universal values that become more pronounced in moments of crisis, values that are often difficult to recognize in "normal" circumstances. We pose fundamental questions such as: "What happens to our values when we are not in a crisis? Where do they get lost in our search for them? And why are crisis moments the ones in which these values are most pronounced?" Through discussions, stories, and reflections, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between crisis pedagogy and universal values, providing valuable insights into the importance of nurturing these values even in situations that are not marked by crises.

Cooperative Learning and the Impact of Technology on Intercultural Education

ENGLISH with B/H/S translation

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

Research and practice of cooperative learning (CL) have spread worldwide with positive results. Yet the application of CL calls for practitioners to experience CL methods and models to gain full understanding of their benefits and challenges. This is especially pertinent in the increasing application of technology in the intercultural classroom. In this workshop participants will experience the way CL can enable them to raise questions about the impact of technology on teachers' and students' roles in the intercultural classroom. Participants are invited to raise relevant issues for teachers in intercultural settings, such as: which technologies are most suited to the intercultural classroom; how to introduce technology in the intercultural classroom; how to use CL in online contexts; what does the teacher need to know about the impact of technology on intercultural education.

AI Integration in Education for Competences Development

ENGLISH with B/H/S translation

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

Artificial intelligence (AI) enables students to accomplish various educational tasks traditionally expected of them, often without the awareness of their teachers. As AI rapidly develops, it has the potential to surpass traditional teaching methods focused on information delivery and classical problem-solving. By embracing and integrating AI, educators can foster the development of critical thinking skills, necessitating a pedagogical shift towards more effective approaches that empower students with the competencies required for success in the digital age. Tools such as adaptive learning platforms, intelligent tutoring systems, and AI-powered data analytics can enhance teaching practices and personalize learning experiences. Providing training to teachers on utilizing these tools can yield benefits and align their education with the competences-based C4G model. The integration of AI tools in the workshop will provide with hands-on experience and practical insights into utilizing AI effectively in educational settings. The workshop will provide training to participants on AI tools for content, image, audio, and video generation.

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

The skill of peace is crucial for understanding connections, conducting independent analyses, and devising strategies, all aimed at discussing unrest and violence. It encompasses various abilities, including an understanding of the causes of unrest and violence, individual capabilities for promoting peace, and societal and international conditions. This skill also involves assessing one's own potential and abilities, and it can be imparted to students in schools as well as through independently organized learning processes within groups. Responsible peace education is not possible without this skill, but it alone is not sufficient; other abilities are also required. This workshop can provide practical assistance in coping with the everyday challenges of pedagogy.

Fighting Societal Violence through Creative (Out-of- Classroom) Engagement in Schools - Examples of Best Practices

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

We want to present a series of common practices on the prevention of peer violence that we implemented in our school over two school years. The activities received a positive response from the target groups. We received support from the Federal Ministry of Education and media support from BHT through the program "Parent Meeting." Our project consisted of a series of coordinated and systematic lectures and workshops on the topic of "Prevention of Peer Violence": Lecture for teachers and educators in the municipality of Donji Vakuf (delivered by Prof. Dr. Refik Ćatić), Creative and artistic workshops for students (small painting, decoupage, and calligraphy school) with a large number of participants, Theatrical performance "Zero Hour" based on the text by Davor Špišić (repeated several times), Short film "Raise Your Voice" (broadcasted on BHT), Lecture for teachers and parents (by Vesna Balagija, a psychologist at the Bugojno Center for Mental Health), Workshops for parents and students, and many other activities. We combined all these practices into a brochure that we wanted to give to the attendees at the presentation. The goal was to raise awareness in the community about the existing problem and, with expert assistance and peer education, prevent peer violence.

Conversational Politeness in Classroom Discourse (Examples from Teaching Practice)

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

The discourse of the classroom is considered a special form of language use or linguistic interaction, which is observed through the lens of asymmetric power relations in the teacher-student relationship. In some approaches, this asymmetry also extends to the mutual relationships among students, which implies sociocultural differences in social status or identity, as well as gender-marked differences. Communication interaction in classroom discourse is based on asymmetric dualism, confirmed by the fact that the teacher has more resources at their disposal to direct and control the course of interaction. Furthermore, the teacher has the power to assign speech roles or to use specific linguistic means to demand or discourage the performance of certain conversational actions. The paper equally examines these discourse roles, as well as forms of language use related to the phenomenon of linguistic politeness and conversational dominance. Conclusions are drawn in light of research results on the use of so-called strong speech among students (Aljukić and Kahvedžić 2022).

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

The workshop is based on experiences from history teaching and addresses the question of how wars are covered in the classroom, given that the majority of historical content in the curriculum deals with wars while peace is hardly mentioned. The workshop will provide examples of how the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995 is addressed in the curricula and textbooks used in all three national programs. It will also offer examples of teaching strategies and methods that engage students in the discussion and promotion of the value of peace, emphasizing the use of a multiperspective approach, oral history, personal narratives, and tasks that encourage active participation and critical thinking among students.

Diversophy Game on Decolonization: The Power Of Interaction

ENGLISH with B/H/S translation

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

Given the importance of game play in establishing and affirming colonial legacies, our main objective behind developing a diversophy game on decolonization has been to bring people together and offer them a new perspective on game playing that moves beyond the hegemony of one culture or group over the other and give equal learning spaces for all cultures to thrive and peacefully coexist. This game session will be preceded by a paper on the role of games in (de)legitimizing the history of colonialism. Diversophy game series aims at discovering cultures, sharing diverse experiences, and getting enriched by what is discovered. This game does not claim to be exhaustive or to promote a single truth about a given social group or a particular culture. Rather it acknowledges and cherishes cultural differences between and even within cultures.

Child in the Hospital

B/H/S or Slovenian

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

When a child comes to the hospital, they encounter new places, unfamiliar people, medical equipment, examinations, and procedures. In addition to being ill, they may experience severe pain and fear. The stress can be even greater when their parents go home, leaving them alone and abandoned in the hospital. For a sick child, the hospital is something unknown, where they find themselves against their will due to the necessity of treatment. Hospitalization, in psychological terms, represents a sudden and harsh separation of the child from their home environment. Treatment in the hospital can completely change a child's behavior. Adapting to new life changes is difficult but necessary for children in the preschool and school-age periods. Some children cope with it with minor issues, while others may face more significant problems, which can manifest as a child's crying, maladaptive behavior, apathy, aggression, regression, or psychosomatic illnesses. Special attention must be paid to the youngest children, as their adaptation mechanisms are still developing in the early years of life. Experts often refer to the first years of a child's life as a critical period for their social, physical, and mental development. Hospitalization often affects children up to the age of six who are in the preschool stage of development. This vulnerability is further increased if they find themselves in a foreign environment without a familiar caregiver. Therefore, having good hospital educators on the hospital ward, in addition to the participation of medical staff, is essential in the hospital environment.

Respecting Differences in a Peaceful Classroom

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

Prejudices often lead to distrust and conflicts within the classroom and parent community. Since prejudices are difficult to change and influence children's upbringing and awareness at a very early age, it is essential for teachers to work towards combating prejudices in children and developing their critical thinking. Learning and Teaching for Peace

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

During the presentation, I plan to touch upon all the activities, projects, and practices I have carried out with my students. One of my visions for teaching and learning is to engage children's minds with concrete ideas about knowledge, socially beneficial engagement, and projects. I believe that in this way, students develop the notion of school as a safe place, their thoughts are occupied with positive ideas, and they begin to believe that they can accomplish great things. I want to believe that in such an atmosphere, there is no room for the emergence of extremes like terrible violence. I make every effort to teach students that all people are the same; we only differ in our determination and efforts to make this world a better place to live. One of the reasons I worked on concrete practices involving Roma people is precisely the negative prejudices that exist about them. Prejudices and stereotypes are something that poisons our society and can lead to the aforementioned extremes. It is important to react in a timely manner and put in maximum effort to write the most beautiful stories possible from the classroom because everything starts from there.

Lack of Interculturalism or How Schools Teach Us That Otherness Is Dangerous?

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

Our society is facing the ubiquitous processes of constructing uniform identities suitable for manipulative games by the main centers of power. Introducing the concept of interculturalism in education necessarily compels us to confront the narrow understanding of identity promoted in the media space and society in general, and to offer adequate solutions in the form of teaching critical thinking and media literacy. Intercultural sensitivity and competence are reflected in the ability to present cultural differences as an advantage and potential for the development of more complete student personalities. This workshop aims to raise awareness of the importance of promoting interculturalism or identity pluralism in schools, and to present tools of critical thinking that can be used to promote diversity as an asset and value in itself.

Your Classroom - A Safe Place

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

What can we do concretely and right here and now to encourage ourselves in order to be able to learn and teach children? Personal development is a lifelong journey, and we tend to neglect ourselves when we are "mature." There are many challenges and obstacles that can undermine motivation and self-confidence. "Teaching the teaching staff about the principles of trauma-sensitive approaches in working with students is seen as a fundamental prerequisite for the protection and improvement of mental health, both for children and teachers."

The Impact of Trauma on Academic Achievement and Trauma-Informed Schools

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

The work aims to raise awareness about the impact of trauma experienced by children on their academic success and the role of the school in their lives. What role can one teacher play, and how can they offer regulation and encourage students towards self-regulation? In what ways do coping mechanisms for trauma affect classroom dynamics, and what is needed to ensure that the classroom is a safe environment? A safe environment is crucial because students can only acquire knowledge, awaken playfulness, and curiosity when they feel secure. How can a trauma-informed school environment be created, and what is required for schools to be safe havens for children, especially when home isn't a safe place?

Owl Forest Etiquette and Owl's Forest Classroom - Service Learning

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

"Owl's Forest Etiquette" is a publication for preschool and early school-age children that educates them about responsible behavior in nature through rhymes. "Owl's Forest Classroom" is an outdoor classroom, an idea born out of the need to offer children a new, different, educational experience in the city of Zenica, aiming to positively impact the development of ecological awareness, motivate individuals, groups, and educational institutions to take children out into nature. The goal of this practice is to change the paradigm and convey the message that nature and natural resources are common goods that we must take care of. Other goals include understanding that humans should use natural resources but also be aware of environmental issues and work together to address them, with the aim of reducing litter, preventing fires, preserving biodiversity, and bringing joy to the hearts of Zenica's children. The name is inspired by an owl that is known for its profound wisdom and is often associated with a teacher. The wise owl, through 10 illustrations on the classroom board and rhymes in the book "Owl's Forest Etiquette," addresses children and conveys messages of responsible behavior in nature. Service learning or learning through engagement promotes the development of children's competencies to perceive and participate in the community according to their abilities and age. It emphasizes learning outside the classroom and connecting the knowledge that children need to learn in the classroom with everyday life. It is characterized by a high transfer of knowledge and competencies, a high degree of student participation in the decision-making process regarding content, methods, and activities defined as a service that the student provides for community development. Note: In addition to presenting the practice, this is also a promotion of the book, which is a product of the practice with the same name.

DETALJAN OPIS RADIONICE

Predstavljanje programa i metodologije rada u obliku publikacije, materijala čiju primjenu zagovaramo i ohrabrujemo.

Multi-Award-Winning Innovative Practice: 'Children as Guardians of the Planet and the World'

B/H/S

DETAILS:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND PARTICIPANTS LIST

The project includes activities in the field of environmental education, tolerance education, and drama education. Within the scope of environmental and drama education, an original author's play titled "When Little Hands Join Together" was created, emphasizing the importance of bees in the ecosystem and the significance of unity. Inspired by this success, we continued and developed a new environmental play last year titled "Who Loves the Planet, Collects and Separates Garbage," with which we will perform again at the festival. As part of a comprehensive developmental program and intercultural education, through various activities, we aim to introduce children to the concept of tolerance, teach them about themselves, learn about each other, discuss differences, and explore how to live together harmoniously. In our kindergarten, we celebrate all holidays together and present the culture and traditions of all three ethnic groups living in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Additionally, every year, we learn about the culture and traditions of different countries worldwide by tasting their food, making costumes, and learning traditional dances. All the mentioned activities in environmental and tolerance education over the past two years have resulted in the realization of the "Children Are the Guardians of the Planet and the World" Festival for Ecology and Peace on the Main Stage of the Bosnian National Theater in Zenica. The festival involved around 200 children aged from 10 months to 12 years, parents, numerous community experts, the engagement and voluntary contributions of many students, and received excellent media support.

Ecological justice recognizes human and planetary well-being as one. Ecological justice extends the concept of justice to more-than-human interactions and understands humans as not only social but ecological beings as well. Peace and ecological justice are interconnected and strive to create a world where the planet and all on it can thrive. Ecological justice needs to be integrated into the content and methods of education if planetary peace, a holistic and inclusive vision that seeks to create a world that nurtures collective(more-than-human) well-being, is to be achieved.
